Sustainability Focus
The main focus of this adventure is the preservation of the forests and biodiversity in the Carpathian Mountains. You will be able to work on projects that are restoring biodiversity hotspots, saving endangered wildlife and working with local communities.
You will also get first-hand experience of the traditional way of life in rural Romania to see how people can live sustainably and preserve their heritage.
On this adventure, we work with the Foundation Conservation Carpathia to help them in their mission to create Europe’s largest forest wilderness National Park in the Romanian Făgăraș Mountains. They aim to create a self-sustaining ecosystem, which benefits nature & people whilst mitigating climate change.
You will get a hands on experience monitoring the wildlife, reconstructing the forest habitat and even pick up some survival skills along the way.

LOCATION
Romania is nestled in southeastern Europe. This adventure takes you from the capital of Bucharest to the Carpathian Mountains and the Transylvanian Plateau. History, nature and sustainability converge to make an unforgettable adventure. Direct flights are available to its capital city, Bucharest from several UK airports.
We offer a range of itineraries for everyone including schools, 18-30 year olds and nature enthusiasts. Below is an example of an 8 day trip for high school students. For group bookings we are able to adapt the itinerary to suit your specific needs and preferences.
ITINERARY
This itinerary is complemented by the wonderful team at the FCC Foundation. They will take the time to explain all about the incredible work taking place to enhance the environment.
Unsustainable logging and abusive exploitation practices have severely damaged thousands of hectares of forests, leaving the soils on the mountain slopes unprotected and exposed to erosion. The Foundation Conservation Carpathia have been restoring the damaged habitats. Alien species of trees are being removed and original, native species are being re-introduced to restore the natural ecosystem of the area.
Romania has over 6 million hectares of forest, with a significant proportion of this being virgin. The Foundation has planted over 2 million saplings from their organic tree nurseries. Once again one of the key factors is the work with local communities so that they benefit from the success of the forest rather than its destruction.
FOREST habitat restoration
The wildlife populations of the Făgăraș Mountains have suffered severely from over-poaching and hunting. Work is taking place to protect the wildlife so that the natural ecosystem can once again flourish. Bison, bears, grey wolves, beavers and the Eurasian lynx are being re-introduced and monitored in the region.
Wildlife-human conflict mitigation is a key aspect of wildlife conservation in the region. Here students will learn about how the conservationists work with the local communities so that any impact on the local people is minimised and managed.
